Criteria

District 7 will maintain a fair and consistent identification system for selection of students for the Challenge Program.

All students will be considered for placement in the Challenge program. 

  • The Gifted Education Specialist will screen all third grade students in spring using the first subtest of each battery of the CogAT (Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal). 

  • Students who score a 120 on the CogAT Screening Assessment will be administered the complete CogAT.

  • Parents will be notified of qualification status prior to the start of the upcoming school year.


Intermediate Program Overview
The elementary level Challenge Program begins with testing students the second semester of third grade. Beginning in fourth grade, identified students work with a gifted education specialist one hour per week with grade level peers. Fourth and fifth graders are also clustered together into regular classrooms where the classroom teacher differentiates the curriculum to meet the needs of students in the Challenge Program.

 

Program Requirements

The following are some expectations for ALL students in the Challenge Program:

  • Attend and participate in the pull-out sessions

  • 5th graders must participate in the Science Fair

  • 4th graders must participate in the Young Authors Contest

  • Maintain excellent performance in the regular classroom
